The Eco Sunscreen Edit: Seven of the Best Non-Toxic Vegan Suncreams

Choosing the perfect sunscreen can be a tricky process for the conscious consumer. Not only should a great sun cream be effective against both UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays, it should also be free from animal testing and ingredients (many sunscreens contain beeswax or lanolin). Although there are now many vegan sunscreens on the market, for a product to be eco-friendly it should also be non-toxic to our bodies and the environment.

Sun protection products traditionally contain chemical sunscreens including oxybenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate, however there are concerns over the safety of these ingredients. Laboratory studies have suggested that some of these chemical UV filters may mimic hormones – disrupting the endocrine and reproductive systems – and many people report sunscreen-related skin allergies. Opting for a sun cream containing mineral sunscreens such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide is a safer option for our bodies.

But it’s not just potential health risks that we need to take into consideration when choosing a non-toxic sunscreen; we now know that some of the chemical ingredients in sun cream have been linked to coral bleaching. Even just a very small amount of these chemicals can cause viral infections in the algae that live in coral and provide it with oxygen. When the algae dies, the coral loses its oxygen and food supply, resulting in a loss of colour and an increased risk of illness, DNA damage and reproductive problems. As a consequence, Hawaii is set to be the first U.S. state to ban sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, but until a worldwide ban is issued, consumers need to take responsibility by avoiding toxic products.

We’ve researched the best natural, vegan and non-toxic sunscreens, so if you’re heading to the beach this summer you can relax and enjoy the sun safely whilst helping to protect our oceans.
