Three Mood-Boosting Aromatherapy Blends to Cure Your Winter Blues

For many people, January can feel like the gloomiest month of the year. After the expense and over-indulgence that comes with Christmas, purses may be feeling lighter and skinny jeans may be feeling tighter come the new year. The cold and often miserable weather can leave us feeling tired and low, whilst returning to work and trying to get organised again after a break from the daily routine can send our stress levels soaring.

Aromatherapy – the therapeutic use of essential oils – is an excellent way to help boost your mood naturally. One of the easiest methods of using essential oils is to make your own perfume blends. Made from a mixture of only plant and essential oils, aromatherapy perfumes are the perfect choice for those looking for a natural fragrance product.

Although it may be tempting to increase the amount of essential oils stated in a recipe, please do not underestimate their potency. Essential oils are powerful substances and a little really does go a long way; adding too many drops could lead to skin irritation and sensitivity. Always use a reputable brand to be sure that you are using pure, high quality essential oils. We recommend professional company Quinessence, who are Leaping Bunny certified and vegan friendly.

To make your perfume blends you will also need some glass rollerball bottles, widely available online. Simply pour the jojoba oil into the bottle, add the essential oils and secure the top. You can even design your own labels! Store your blends in a cool, dark place to prolong their shelf life. They will generally keep for about six months but your nose will tell you when it is time to make a fresh blend! Shake your perfume gently before use and apply to pulse points throughout the day.

With such a wide range of essential oils available, each with different therapeutic properties, it’s fun to experiment with different blends and create your own signature scent. To get you started, here are three mood-boosting blends to try.

As with any product, remove and discontinue use if irritation occurs, and never ingest essential oils.

Energising Perfume Blend

This blend uses rosemary, which has been shown to help increase alertness and improve the memory. Basil is excellent for helping to clear the head, while grapefruit’s aroma is sweet and invigorating. Use this blend to help stay focused when you have a busy day ahead, and during those times when you could do with a burst of energy.

  • 10ml jojoba oil
  • 2 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 2 drops basil essential oil
  • 2 drops grapefruit essential oil

Uplifting Perfume Blend

Jasmine is widely used in aromatherapy for its ability to improve the mood, and ylang ylang’s heady, relaxing scent makes it a perfume in its own right. Bergamot, along with the other citrus oils, are well-known for their mood enhancing properties. This blend is perfect for boosting positivity and happiness.

  • 10ml jojoba oil
  • 2 drops bergamot essential oil
  • 2 drops ylang ylang essential oil
  • 2 drops jasmine essential oil

Relaxing Perfume Blend

Lavender, famed for its deeply relaxing properties, blends well with the calming aromas of sandalwood and mandarin to make a soothing perfume. This blend is ideal for helping to reduce stress levels during the day, and for helping to unwind and promote peaceful sleep at night.

  • 10ml jojoba oil
  • 2 drops sandalwood essential oil
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 2 drops mandarin essential oil
