We Had Lunch at Purezza, the UK’s First All-Vegan Pizzeria

If someone told you there was a magical, mystical place where you could eat EVERYTHING on the menu…and that this “everything” was, to be specific, pizza? With spicy salami and dripping in cheese? Chances are you wouldn’t believe us, but this place exists.

It’s called Purezza, it’s the UK’s first vegan pizzeria, and you can find it on the Brighton seafront.

Purezza, the UK’s very first 100% plant-based pizzeria, is a bright and airy place in St. James Street – with a sea view, naturally.  We’re in Brighton, after all. The fresh decor and prime location is a good promise of what’s to come, food-wise.

As the scent of lightly roasted garlic filled the air, co-founder Tim Barclay told us that Purezza (Italian for “purity”) has been open for six months, and it’s only getting more popular. Aside from their extensive and very impressive pizza menu, Purezza also serves breakfast, salads, ice cream and desserts.

The mushrooms arrive fresh each morning, Tim tells us – and trust us, that’s something you can taste. The between “good” mushrooms and run-of-the-mill ones comes across at first taste.  The crust is fluffly and light to Neapolitan standards and the artichokes provide a zest of freshness.

But let’s get to the most important thing: the cheese.

It’s made fresh in house (the process includes coconut oil!) and, yes, ladies and gentlemen…it’s stringy!

The delightful mozzarella-like cheese very closely mimics the real deal, as confirmed by our resident photographer David – an authentic Italian. In texture and taste, this remains one of the best vegan cheeses we’ve had.

All in all, Purezza is pretty much a vegan’s paradise. The pizza is supreme, the location is fab and the staff is friendly, welcoming and capable. We can’t wait to go back.
